Why does my Asus router keep losing internet connection?

If you are an avid netizen, facing off with issues related to internet connectivity might be a regular scenario. You might be wondering about the steps that you can take to avoid these. Well, this post is just about that. If you have an asus router that’s not connecting to the internet or have a router dropping connection frequently, this post will help you find resolution to all of your complaints.

But, before you begin, let’s understand why your Asus router may behave in unlikely ways.

Router dropping connection- Possible Reasons

The “Asus router not connecting to internet” issue is quite frequent and a lot of users, including us, face it often. So, before you start resolving the issue, it’s a good idea to understand what makes it happen in the first place.

Radio signal distortion is inevitable and an inherent nature of signal transmission. As the asus router’s signals travel through air in your room, they strike signals from many other devices that you may already have in your house. These include, electromagnetic signals from radio devices, wireless signals, television signals and more. Now, when all of these signals collide with each other, that’s when distortion takes place, making your WiFi signal strength drop significantly. So, the fact that there are multiple signal sources in the world we live in, causes the Asus router not connecting to internet like issues. Now, you might argue that you are using ethernet cables for signal transmission, but having the right hardware is also important. Your router is never as fast as the manufacturers claim it to be and the speeds will fluctuate always.

Resolving asus router not connecting to internet error

Considering you’re now on this blog, we’d assume that you already have one of the best router hardware for yourself, which leaves us with three possible reasons why your router may be dropping connection frequently.

Router Hardware Issues

Considering you have the Asus router setup at your home, it is possible that there is some issue with the IoT device or the other devices you are using. The hardware or software drivers can be incompatible and may be a contributing factor in the issues that you are facing. You can check for the latest updates for the router hardware you are using. If you continue to face issues, you can follow the Asus router reset steps to eliminate any issues with the device.

Signal Interference

Like we discussed, the world is surrounded by wireless signals from the devices at our home, office, cafes, and more. You can open your mobile phone and scan for the available wireless networks around you, and you will see the reality. Even though you have no access to them, their presence is enough to distort the one you have access to. Make sure your router is installed at the location with minimum interference. Always place it away from the microwaves, refrigerators, cordless phones, TVs, etc. Better yet, choose a wired cable connection whenever possible.

Channel Bandwidth issues

Channel bandwidth is the available amount of internet signals available for your Asus router setup. The more the bandwidth, the more data can be processed on the network. Though most routers can adjust the channel bandwidth automatically, you can set it from your side if you want. Here are some steps you can follow:

  • Login to ASUS router setup wizard, select the Wireless tab, and click on the General button.
  • Locate the option with “Band” written on it and from the drop down menu next to it, select the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band, accordingly.
  • Scroll down to find the “Channel Bandwidth” option.
  • If you select the “2.4GHz” Band above, select the “20/40 MHz” bandwidth option. There are several overlapping channels in this band with at least 8 out of the 11 channels overlapping. Now, overlapping WiFi channels contribute to network interference. Therefore, if you choose a wider channel width that bonds multiple overlapping channels you will only experience more interference. Result? A weaker wireless performance than otherwise expected faster speeds.
  • If you select the “5GHz 1” Band, select “20/40/80 MHz” bandwidth option
  • If you had selected the “5GHz 2” Band, select the “20/40/80/160 MHz” bandwidth option.

There can be additional reasons responsible for issues with your Asus router. If you face trouble resolving the same, you can reach out to the team at our end now.
